Pet commissions can be challenging because fur color and markings are unique to every animal. When a client approaches me to render their pet, I try to get many photos of it from every possible angle. You can see here that our subject has one white cheek that goes up beneath her eye, and one grey cheek. Paying attention to the boundaries of markings and little details is important to ensure the owner really feels like they are getting a portrayal of their pet!
This client was fairly specific about the tone of the piece and the pose that they wanted for their pet. For instance: fine furniture and a dignified look! I created an initial digital sketch to rough out the color patches and markings, and sent it to the client so they could approve the pose. I happened to have a lovely pattern in my personal morgue file that I used for reference.
Now, watch me draw and paint her!
